With a goal of raising 1 million dollars to build the Kids Against Cancer Pediatric Oncology Center at Staten Island University Hospital Northwell Health, approximately $250,000 is already on hand to begin this undertaking.
This project already has significant community support from a variety of sources.
Fundraising events for this project have been embraced by the community and several individuals and organizations have already given, including:
- sold out, two courses simultaneously, golf outings for several years.
- an entire day’s commission from a brokerage firm.
- heartfelt donations placed in dozens of coin boxes at local businesses.
- website donations.
- payroll deductions from large employers.
- The Metropolitan Transit Authority on SI is a major supporter of Kids Against Cancer and they make annual donations.
- Dr. Sarah Vaiselbuh, Director of Staten Island University Hospital Children’s Cancer Center and the HistioCare Program, took the lead by being the first to donate after the fundraising campaign was announced at the hospital’s Charity Ball.
“Brick and Mortar” isn’t the only focus of the Kids Against Cancer
Project With such an ambitious undertaking, Kids Against Cancer has already accomplished great endeavors during the interim by reaching out to sick children and their families to lend a helping hand.
KAC has been helping families obtain some normalcy in their lives by providing support. Examples of this support include providing financial support for the basic necessities of life to relocating a Cancer affected family whose home was uninhabitable due to Hurricane Sandy. No one should have to worry about where they will live after a hurricane while caring for a child recovering from cancer. The financial and emotional commitment made and displayed by KAC in this arena is immeasurable in its impact.
Kids Against Cancer’s Annual Toy Drive has proven to be a staple within the community for over 20 years. The volunteers at KAC coordinate this effort year round. Through the generosity and support of employees of the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), a bus is solely dedicated to KAC for months leading up to the holiday season. The bus advertisements are replaced with colorful “Santa’s Express” signs and the dingy inside is replaced with a North Pole theme including garland and decorations which amaze and inspire everyone who boards it. The bus driver, who is the spitting image of Santa with the signature white beard and belly, drives throughout the five boroughs of New York City stopping at many of the MTA’s depots collecting donated toys. As the holiday season approaches the inside of the bus is packed with toys. Santa’s Express then stops at local hospitals spreading holiday joy to children who have the unfortunate need to remain in the hospital for the holidays. Each child as well as their siblings receives an overwhelming bounty of age appropriate toys. For that moment they are able to replace the mal content of their illness with the joy of holiday spirit and the hope that it brings. The smiles on their faces say it all.
Leaders in this effort

Sentiments from those who have been already helped by KAC
Kids against cancer has already donated $300,000 to re-design and re-construct the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at SIUH and helped bridge a shortfall for the Joseph Maffeo Foundation, a foundation honoring fallen 9/11 Firefighter Joseph Maffeo, to finish the renovation of the Pediatric Unit. In addition tens of thousands of dollars have been donated to needy patients and families, assisting them through the most difficult time of their lives. We have included some heartfelt testimonials from just a few of the families that KAC has helped over the years.
